Private process servers must complete a civil process service educational course approved by the Supreme Court of Texas within one year of (and no more than) filing your Private Process Server Application. Upon completion of the course, the course director should supply you with a certificate of completion. The original certificate must be submitted with your application.

Submit a Process Server Course for Approval

The Texas Process Server Review Board is in the process of standardizing documentation for process server training courses. Once finalized, this material will be the standardized training material used in all courses for the purpose of training Texas process servers certified by the Texas Process Server Review Board. In the meantime, a civil process service course may be submitted for approval by the Texas Process Server Review Board as set out below.

Texas Rules of Civil Procedure (Amended) Rules 103 and 536(a) offer general guidelines for submitting a process server course for approval. A civil process service course that meets the following requirements: a minimum of 7 hours of monitored instruction; instruction on applicable laws, including the historical development of the law, with emphasis on practical training of proper service and return of service (for example, using sample returns depicting both correct and incorrect returns of service); instruction on a process server's exposure to criminal liability; instruction on unique issues involving family law cases; and basic competence testing upon completion of the course.
