Guardianship Certification Board (GCB)

Certified guardians must complete twelve hours of continuing education during each two-year certification period. The twelve hours of continuing education must include two hours of ethics and one hour of legislative update. Up to four hours of continuing education may be carried forward for the following certification period's requirements, but ethics hours and legislative update hours do not carry forward. Provisionally certified guardians are subject to the same continuing education requirements as certified guardians. To claim continuing education credit, an activity must be an organized program of learning (no self-study is allowed) and must be approved by the Board. The Board will make every effort to identify relevant activities and post them to the website as approved activities in advance. Approval of continuing education activities may be requested by using the form provided. You will be required to obtain documentation of attendance or completion of CE activities from the sponsoring entity. The Verification of Attendance form may be used if a certificate of attendance/completion is not provided by the sponsoring entity.

Continuing education credit may also be earned by speaking at a seminar, teaching a course, or authoring a book or article. Documentation showing the course or speech is completed, or the book or article is published, will be required. Please use the form provided to request credit for teaching, speaking or writing. Do not submit verification of attendance forms to the Board as you complete the activity; verifications will be required at the time you renew your certification.

NOTE: Under Rule XIII(a), the activity for which approval is sought must be an organized program of learning dealing with matters that are directly related to the guardianship profession, the services guardians provide, and the legal process involved in guardianship proceedings. "Automatic" approval for certain sponsoring entities is not granted; a request form and appropriate supporting documents must be submitted to the Board for approval of each activity. Click here for a list of previously scheduled Board-approved courses. Details on upcoming approved courses are listed below, with approved online courses on a separate page. Approved courses with limited enrollment (e.g., restricted to employees and volunteers of a specific guardianship program) are not listed on the website, but are maintained separately by Board staff. See the Board's Rules VII and XIII for more details.
